Personal Reflection #5 what did i learn in this course ? and how will i aply it?

In this course I learned many different things about culture diversity, such as respecting other cultures and aspects and living together as a one culture different cultures and belief system and I learned that a diverse country includes many people from all over the world and from different places with different cultures living together as one, and create a new culture which is much stronger than the past one, and I learned a lot of new vocabulary such as melting pot , salad bowl , stereotyping , bias , and much more which i didn't know before this course. I learned about the paralympians which are athletes with special needs, and the future center which helps them to give them what they need, also I learned about treating people in a good way that doesn't make them feel that they are different or I’m superior to them and I learned about stereotyping which is not good because it judges people without knowing them. i learned about gap year were students take break after high school so they relax and find out what they want to do and study when they enter the university.i didn't have a gap year because i didn't know about it tell i started college and learned about it in this course, but i still can do volunteering work in my country or outside my country,

PART 3: CAMBODIA CUSTOMS AND VALUES

Objective: To understand some similarities between Emirati and Cambodian Culture

Task: Compare Cambodian and Emirati values

Highlight in yellow all the values that are similar to Emirati values

A.   Traditional Cambodian values includes a strong family relationship such as the Emirati.

B.   Cambodian-born people have a respect for there culture and older people.

C.   Cambodian families tend to be very private and reluctant to discuss family issues or conflict with non-family members

D.   Stoicism is a highly valued Cambodian character trait, reducing the tendency to complain about their health or services they are receiving

E.   Modesty, particularly for women, is very important

F.    Visitors to Cambodian-born people’s homes are often expected to remove their shoes, however they might not ask

G.   Accepting of food and refreshments when offered may break down barriers, open communication and build trust

H.   Cambodian-born people regard touching people on the head or pointing feet or shoes at them as offensive.

I.      Cambodians consider it impolite to make eye contact with someone who is older or considered a superior

J.    Cambodians have a tendency not to question instructions or authority

K.   ‘Yes’ may be an ambiguous response to a question or request, and does not necessarily indicate agreement. Reponses that might mean ‘no’ include; no response, changing the subject, or statements such as ‘it’s OK’ or ‘no problem’ or even an unconvincing ‘yes’

L.    It may take time to develop working relationships, trust and rapport

M.   Loud or over-familiar behavior towards others is generally not favored.

N.   Cambodians tend to avoid showing anger or getting involved in confrontation

O.   Cambodians prefer to be addressed using their correct title. For example Mr, Mrs and Dr

P.   Women traditionally retain their own family names on marriage or they may have two surnames. Cambodian names are traditionally written with the surname first, followed by the given name.

Comparison between UAE culture and Cambodian culture:

Culture is important because if there was no culture there won't be identity or uniqueness Our culture tough us to accept others no matter who they are and we  love to meet new people and get to know them by inviting them to our house for lunch or dinner  and we show respect to the older people  while Cambodian people  avoid showing emotions  and try to remain calm while we express our emotion.

A. Which was your favourite picture of Cambodia? Why? Compare your life to that of Cambodian villagers. 



This one was my favorite because it shows that they are a happy family even though that they may be poor and their smiles show me that they are a peaceful people. They live in houses made of small pieces of wood cover with leaves while we live in fancy houses, our women works in companies and they have colleges degree while their women are not educated.

Why are they so poor? What Is the best way to raise the standard of living of poor people?
What do you think your life would be like in Abu Dhabi if oil had not been 


Cambodia has a lot of nice natural landscapes which can bring tourists to enjoy these fabulous sights and they can create activities for the tourists and a lot of different things such as hiring someone to do tours and explaining brief history of Cambodia for the tourists. And if the oil wasn’t discovered in UAE , we won't be able to see this high urban development neither it will have the global status as it does have now.

Task 2: The Temples - Reflection


There are three very famous temples mentioned in the movie.


· Angkor Wat
· Bayon 
· Ta Prohm

Which temple one do you think looks the most interesting? Why? When were these magnificent temples built? How were they built? Which religion inspired them and which religion replaced the original one? The Cambodian empire was incredibly big and powerful? Why did it fall and the cities get overgrown by the jungle for five hundred years?


Angkor Wat temple looks interesting to me because it covers more ground and contain a lot of monument than the Egyptian pyramids. It is located in south East Asia built in abandoned city in Cambodia and researches suggests that it took almost thirty years to complete and its used as a shrine. The temple been abandon because battle that brings the end of this temple between kingdom of Siam.
